PhD Thesis Word Count Guide (UK)

PhD thesis word counts vary by university and discipline. Use this table as a planning reference — always confirm your specific institution's regulations before submission.

DisciplineTypical Word CountApprox. Pages
Arts & Humanities (English, History, Philosophy)80,000 – 100,000250 – 320
Social Sciences (Sociology, Politics, Education)80,000 – 100,000250 – 320
Law80,000 – 100,000250 – 320
Business & Management70,000 – 90,000220 – 290
Psychology60,000 – 80,000200 – 260
Health Sciences & Nursing60,000 – 80,000200 – 260
Life Sciences (Biology, Biomedical)50,000 – 80,000160 – 260
Engineering40,000 – 80,000140 – 260
Computer Science40,000 – 80,000140 – 260
Physical Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Maths)40,000 – 70,000140 – 220

As a rough rule, a UK PhD thesis is typically structured as: Introduction (8–10%), Literature Review (20–25%), Methodology (15–20%), Results (15–20%), Discussion (15–20%) and Conclusion (8–10%). Universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Imperial, Manchester, Edinburgh and Warwick publish discipline-specific upper limits in their research-degree handbooks — check yours early to avoid last-minute trimming.

Worried about hitting your word limit? Our editors can restructure, trim or expand chapters to meet your university's regulations without losing your argument.

Common PhD Viva Questions & How to Answer Them

A UK PhD viva is an oral defence in front of internal and external examiners. Most run between two and four hours. Examiners want to confirm three things: your work is original, your methodology is defensible, and you understand your contribution. Below are the questions almost every viva will cover — prepare a confident two-to-three minute answer for each.

Q1. Can you summarise your thesis in three minutes?

Practice a clear elevator pitch covering your research question, methodology, key findings and contribution. Examiners use this to set the tone of the discussion.

Q2. What is the original contribution of your research?

State the gap your work fills, in one sentence if possible. Cite the specific empirical, theoretical or methodological novelty — not just “there was no prior study on X”.

Q3. Why did you choose this research question?

Show how the question evolved from a literature gap, a real-world problem and your own academic interest. Avoid sounding like the topic was assigned to you.

Q4. Why did you select this methodology over alternatives?

Examiners almost always probe methodology. Be prepared to compare your design with at least two alternatives you considered and rejected, and justify the trade-offs.

Q5. What are the main limitations of your study?

Acknowledge weaknesses confidently — sample size, generalisability, instruments, scope. Examiners reward self-awareness; they do not reward false modesty or denial.

Q6. How did you ensure the validity and reliability of your findings?

Discuss triangulation, reflexivity, pilot testing, member checking, inter-rater agreement, statistical assumptions checks — whichever apply. See our methodology guide.

Q7. What theoretical framework underpins your work?

Be ready to defend your framework, name its key thinkers, and explain why it suits your research question better than competing frameworks.

Q8. What ethical issues did your research raise and how did you handle them?

Cover consent, anonymity, data protection (UK GDPR), vulnerable participants, ethics-committee approval, and any incidents you handled during fieldwork.

Q9. What is the practical or policy implication of your findings?

Show your work matters beyond academia. Identify two or three audiences (practitioners, policymakers, organisations) and what each should do differently because of your findings.

Q10. If you could start over, what would you do differently?

A reflective question. Pick one or two genuine improvements (better sampling, additional case study, longer fieldwork) without undermining the thesis itself.

Q11. Where could this research be taken next?

Sketch two or three research directions that build directly on your contribution. Examiners look for a researcher who can extend their own programme of work.

Q12. How does your work relate to recent publications in the field?

Read the latest 6–12 months of literature in your area before the viva. Examiners often ask about a paper published after you submitted.

For a structured mock-viva session with examiner-style probing and a written feedback report, see our dedicated PhD viva preparation service.

Common PhD Thesis Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

After two decades of supporting doctoral researchers, we see the same avoidable mistakes show up in draft after draft. Catching these early can save you months of revision and prevent “major corrections” after the viva.

1. A research question that is too broad or too descriptive. Questions like “What is the impact of social media on society?” cannot be defended at doctoral level — they are essay topics, not research questions.

Fix: Anchor the question in a specific population, context, mechanism and timeframe. Use the FINER test (Feasible, Interesting, Novel, Ethical, Relevant) before committing.

2. A literature review that is a chronological summary rather than a critical synthesis. Examiners expect themes, debates and gaps — not author-by-author paraphrasing.

Fix: Group sources thematically. For each theme, state what is agreed, what is contested, what is missing, and where your work fits. See our literature gap analysis service.

3. Methodology presented as a recipe rather than a justified design. Listing what you did is not enough — you must defend why you did it that way and why alternatives were rejected.

Fix: For each methodological choice, write a paragraph explaining (a) what you did, (b) why this rather than alternatives, (c) what threats to validity it introduces, and (d) how you mitigated them.

4. A results chapter that mixes findings with interpretation. Examiners want a clean separation: report findings in the results chapter, interpret them in the discussion.

Fix: Use neutral, descriptive language in results (“participants reported X in 62% of cases”) and reserve interpretive language (“this suggests Y”) for the discussion. See our results & discussion service.

5. A discussion chapter that simply restates the results. The discussion is where your contribution is made — many drafts under-deliver here.

Fix: Structure each discussion paragraph as: finding → how it relates to literature → what is novel here → implications. End the chapter with limitations and recommendations.

6. Inconsistent referencing and citation style. Mixing Harvard with APA, missing DOIs, broken cross-references — these signal sloppiness and irritate examiners.

Fix: Pick a reference manager (Zotero, EndNote, Mendeley) early. Run a complete reference audit before submission via our thesis formatting service.

7. Weak abstract and conclusion. These are the two sections examiners read first and last — yet many candidates draft them in a rush.

Fix: Write the abstract last, after every chapter is final. Get a specialist abstract review if your supervisor's feedback is unclear.

8. Ignoring AI-detection and plagiarism reports. With Turnitin's AI-detection, many universities now flag drafts that contain ChatGPT-style writing — even if the ideas are your own.

Fix: Always run an AI-detection check before submission. If your similarity is above 15% or AI score is above 5%, rewrite flagged passages in your own voice with proper citation.

9. Submitting before a senior academic has read the full draft end-to-end. Supervisors often only see chapters in isolation. Examiners read the whole document.

Fix: Before submission, get a senior reviewer to read the complete thesis cover-to-cover with fresh eyes. Use our PhD thesis editing service for an external perspective.

10. Skipping mock viva preparation. Walking into a viva cold is the single biggest predictor of major corrections.

Fix: Schedule at least one mock viva four to six weeks before the real defence. See our viva preparation service.
